Nathan Oakes

Director of Education and Student Programs, The Center for Practical Ethics

BIO

Dr. Nathan Oakes is the Director of Education and Student Programs for The Center for Practical Ethics. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Arizona where he specialized in classical Greek philosophy, especially the ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology of Plato and the Hellenistic schools. At TCPE he oversees the student club Compass: Ethics at UM, coordinates our graduate research assistant, heads the Character of Leaders Engagement Committee, and runs miscellaneous student and educational events. As an Assistant Professor of Practice, he also teaches occasionally. His current course is Phil 354: Ethical Leadership.

Outside the university he is a longtime volunteer and leader of youth programming for the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi. He studies computer science from time to time and has recently gotten into meteorology.

WHY CLI?

My Ethical Leadership course examines how leaders do well and badly and hopes to give students the tools to become good (meaning both ethical and effective) leaders. Character building is the natural means of achieving that end.
