Steven Skultety

BIO

Steven Skultety was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado. After graduating from high school in Denver, he received a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Montana in 1999 and then a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 2006. Later that same year he joined the faculty of the University of Mississippi. In 2012, after earning tenure, he became Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion. In 2020 he was promoted to full Professor and in 2021 became Director of the Declaration of Independence Center for the Study of American Freedom. Skultety is author of Conflict in Aristotle’s Political Philosophy (SUNY 2019), a specialist in ancient Greek philosophy, and has also written on various issues in the history of political theory.

WHY CLI?

I’m am interested in developing a course that emphasizes Plutarch’s Lives, with the idea that this text provides unique insight into the character of leaders and ancient conceptions of politics. The Character of Leader Initiative provides an excellent opportunity to develop this class.
